The Watch: From one of the most celebrated figures in modern horology, Daniel Roth. After honing his skills at brands like Jaeger-LeCoultre and Breguet (where he helped revive the brand’s traditional style in the 1970s and 1980s), Roth launched his eponymous brand in 1989. His watches quickly gained recognition for their exceptional craftsmanship, unique case shapes, and intricate movement finishing. Roth was one of the pioneers of independent watchmaking, focusing on quality, innovation, and limited production, which set his pieces apart in the pre-2000s watch world. In 2000, the brand was acquired by the Bulgari Group, but Roth's early designs remain highly sought-after for their originality and artistry.
The Daniel Roth Athys 2 (Ref. 109.Y.60) is an exquisite example of independent watchmaking artistry, blending traditional craftsmanship with distinctive design. Housed in Daniel Roth’s signature double-ellipse case (38mm wide by 41mm tall), this elegant timepiece stands out with its unique silhouette and refined proportions. The dial is a masterpiece of subtle detail, featuring expanding Roman numerals, an inlaid minutes track, and blued hands that provide a pop of color against the white enamel backdrop.
The seconds indication features a sunray motif radiating from the axis of the three-arm hand right through to the graduated segments. Within this distinctive and visually appealing mode of display, each of the arms is a different length and moves steadily and clearly over one of the three superimposed 120° segments, graduated from 0 to 20, from 20 to 40 and from 40 to 60.
The Athys II admirably embodies the major Daniel Roth signature features: double-ellipse case, flame-blued steel arrow-type hands, Roman hour numerals, a fascinatingly original and eminently legible dial, impeccable finishing, exquisite movement decoration.
Condition: Very good, pre-owned condition. Some light case wear. Buckle seems worn around the edges of the lettering. Dial and movement are immaculate.
