The Watch: Launched in 1998, the Hydronaut marked the end of the Tudor Submariner line and the beginning of something more experimental. It was the first dive watch Tudor developed entirely under its own design language—no more rebranded Rolex cases, no more Submariner clones. Just a modern, aggressive design aimed at making Tudor its own name.
The 89190 is the full-size version: 40mm in stainless steel, 200m water resistance, and a surprisingly slim 11mm profile. The bezel is sharply knurled with a frosted aluminum insert, and the crown guards curve out with almost organic detail. On the wrist, it wears flatter and more refined than most tool watches of the era.
The blue sunburst dial has applied indices, a lume-filled Mercedes handset, and a cyclops over the date—a last holdover from the Rolex era. The five-link bracelet features screwed links, a dive extension, and a mix of polish and satin that punches above its weight.
Inside is the ETA 2824-2: reliable, easily serviced, and still ticking strong. Forgotten by Tudor’s official history, the Hydronaut is part of a short-lived generation that deserves a second look.
