The Watch: Vacheron Constantin is the oldest watch manufacture in continuous operation, founded in Geneva in 1755, and the 31 Day Retrograde is one of the quiet highlights of its early 2000s catalog. The complication is simple to describe and difficult to build. A blackened gold hand sweeps across an arc at 12 o'clock to indicate the date, traveling from 1 to 31, then snaps back to the start at the end of the month. A subdial at 6 o'clock displays the day of the week, and a corrector button on the case flank advances the date.
Retrograde displays put real stress on a movement because the indicator hand has to fly back instantly without disturbing the timekeeping. Vacheron solved this with the caliber 1126 R31, an automatic movement built on the Jaeger-LeCoultre 889 base, one of the most respected thin automatic calibers ever produced, with the retrograde module engineered in-house.
The case measures 37mm in 18k white gold, evoking a solid disc intersected by lugs reminiscent of VC's Maltese Cross logo. The silvered dial carries applied white gold Roman numerals and round indexes, and the layout keeps the complication legible without crowding. This is the kind of watch Vacheron made before the Overseas became the center of attention, and it represents the manufacture doing what it has always done best.
