The Watch: Abraham-Louis Breguet was appointed chronometer maker to the French Navy in 1815, and the Marine collection draws on that lineage with a sport watch reading of the house's classical design language. The 5817 is the Marine Big Date, introduced in the mid-2000s as a more wearable sport iteration of the line.
The case is 39mm in stainless steel, 11.9mm thick, with Breguet's signature coin-edged middle case band and curved crown guards. The screw-down crown contributes to 100 meters of water resistance. The dial features Breguet's iconic guilloché finish hand-engraved on a rose engine, bright blued and applied Roman numerals, open-tip Breguet hands filled with luminescent material, an outer minute track, and a big date display at 6 o'clock.
Inside is the caliber 517GG, Breguet's variant of the Frédéric Piguet 1150. It's a thin full-rotor automatic with twin barrels delivering a 65-hour power reserve at 28,800 vph (4 Hz), 35 jewels. The 18k gold rotor is engraved with engine-turned guilloché and shaped to evoke a nautilus shell, a nautical reference that ties back to the collection's theme. The movement finishing includes curved hand-beveled anglage with a high polish, black-polished countersunk screws, Côtes de Genève on the plates, and a radial pattern on the mainspring barrels. Visible through the sapphire caseback.
