The Watch: The Cellini collection has always been the lesser-known part of Rolex's catalog (until its discontinuation in 2023 in favor of the 1908 line). While Rolex's tool and sports dominate the brand's image, the Cellini line is Rolex doing something entirely different: a dress watch with no pretensions toward sport, water resistance, or tool-watch functionality. Sometimes they even got fancy with it. This is something a litte more subtle.
Reference 5241/6 is a larger Cellini, at 38mm in platinum 950. The smaller Cellini references measured 34mm, so the 5241 was Rolex's acknowledgment that dress watch proportions were shifting. In platinum, the case has real weight on the wrist, and the wide, polished bezel is the dominant design element, giving the watch a visual heft that matches the physical mass.
The ice blue dial is exclusive to Rolex's platinum watches. You won't find this color on gold or steel references. It's a subtle, cool tone with applied white gold stick markers and a small seconds sub-dial at 6 o'clock. The caliber 1240 is a manual-winding movement with 17 jewels, and the solid caseback means more platinum mass. That's a very Rolex philosophy: the movement exists to serve the watch, not to be displayed.
The black crocodile leather strap with platinum buckle completes a watch that an absolute sleeper. Subtle but heavy, and a very civilized way to wear a platinum Rolex.
