The Watch: The Panerai Mare Nostrum is one of the most historically significant models in Panerai’s archive. Originally conceived in 1943 as a chronograph for Italian naval officers, the design never reached mass production during the war. It remained a rare prototype until Panerai revived the concept in the 1990s as a modern homage to its maritime roots.
The PAM00716, released in 2017 as part of a limited edition, stays true to that heritage. It features a 42mm stainless steel case with a prominent bezel and brushed finishing, paired with a deep blue dial that reflects Panerai’s naval inspiration. The bicompax layout offers chronograph functionality with running seconds and a 30-minute totalizer, while the tachymeter scale reinforces its tool-watch character.
Inside beats the Panerai Caliber OP XXXIII, a manual-wind movement based on the ETA 2892 with a Dubois-Dépraz chronograph module. The movement offers a 42-hour power reserve and is housed behind a solid caseback engraved with the Mare Nostrum emblem.
Condition: Very good condition with some case marks. Functions operate correctly, and the watch runs well.
