The Watch: Moritz Grossmann was a Glashütte watchmaker who founded his own factory in 1854 and the German School of Watchmaking in 1878. The company that carries his name today was established in 2008 by Christine Hutter, who acquired the rights to the name and built a manufacture in Glashütte to work in his methods.
Grossmann watches put the seconds at 6 o'clock. The Central Second, introduced in 2021, is the exception, moving the hand to the center of the dial. This purple version followed in 2022, limited to 25 pieces worldwide.
The dial is solid silver in an intense purple sunray finish that shifts through several shades depending on the angle. The numerals are white, the hour and minute hands are polished steel filled with HyCeram Luminex, and the central seconds hand is a slim polished steel needle.
The case is 41mm polished steel at 12mm in height, with a sapphire caseback. On the right flank sits Grossmann's winding and setting system: the crown is pulled to set the hands and springs back to its winding position on its own, and a separate pusher below it restarts the movement. Nothing is left extended for dust or water to enter, and the hands cannot be knocked out of position by pushing a crown back in.
Inside is the manufacture cal. 100.11, hand wound, 198 parts, 22 jewels, 18,000 vph, 42 hours of reserve. The pillar movement uses a two-thirds plate of untreated German silver. The balance cock and escape wheel cock are hand-engraved, the ratchet wheel is snailed, the screws are heat-annealed to violet, and the jewels sit in gold chatons. Regulation is by Grossmann micrometer screw on a cantilevered balance cock, adjusted in five positions.
