The Watch: Glashütte Original takes what should be a simple complication, a date, and turns it into the organizing principle of the entire dial. Rather than tucking the date into an aperture or assigning it to a central hand, the Senator Hand Date gives it a dedicated sub-register at 3 o'clock, balanced by the small seconds register at 9. Both are countersunk, adding a focal plane that keeps the dial from reading flat. The result is a watch with more visual character than any date complication has a right to produce.
The case measures 40mm across, 11mm thick, with a generously sloped conical bezel. The sapphire crystal sits slightly domed above the bezel plane, adding a touch of vintage distortion that softens the view.
The dial is matte silver rather than a traditional sunburst, which gives it a quieter glow in changing light. All hour indices are applied, faceted, and polished, and printing is kept to a minimum. The dauphine-style hands carry generous strips of Super-LumiNova.
Inside is Glashütte Original's in-house caliber 39, with a skeletonized winding rotor, three-quarter bridge in the Saxon pocket watch tradition, Glashütte ribbing (not Geneva waves), a swan's neck regulator for fine adjustment, and a distinctive spiral dress pattern on the reduction wheel of the winding system. It runs at 28,800 vph with a 40-hour power reserve and hacking seconds for precise time-setting. One quirk worth mentioning: the quick-set date moves counterclockwise as it counts up.
Water resistance is 50 meters (5 bar), which gives it meaningful splash protection beyond the typical dress watch standard.
This is a 2023 example in excellent condition.
