The Watch: The Bel Canto is a sonnerie au passage, meaning it chimes on the hour, every hour. That complication has historically lived at price points where the conversation starts at five figures and goes up from there. Christopher Ward, a British brand that has built its reputation on punching above its price class, brought it in under $4,000. It won the Petite Aiguille prize at the 2023 GPHG Awards, which is the watchmaking equivalent of an independent film winning at Cannes.
The movement is the caliber FS01, developed by CW's technical director Frank Stelzer. He adapted the brand's existing jumping hour module (JJ01) by adding over 60 new components to create the striking mechanism. The base is a Sellita SW200-1 automatic with a 38-hour power reserve. The chiming mechanism sits on the dial side, fully exposed: you can watch the hammer draw back and strike a tuned steel spring that curves around the edge of the dial. The sound is a D-note, refined over testing of more than 80 different spring and hammer combinations before they landed on the right one. A pusher at 4 o'clock lets you mute the chime when needed, with a small red indicator (shaped like a bird's beak) showing the on/off status.
The 41mm case is Grade 5 titanium, chosen not for its toughness but for its acoustic properties. Titanium resonates better than steel, amplifying the chime. At 13mm thick and 113 grams, it's light for a watch with this much going on under the crystal. The Nero dial is a dark anthracite sunray that reads lighter than photos suggest, providing a contrasting backdrop for the polished bridges and hammer mechanism. The time-telling sub-dial floats at 12 o'clock, suspended over a visible gear train.
Condition: Excellent condition. Came with stickers on the case and bracelet which I have left in place.
