The Watch: Ulysse Nardin released the Freak in 2001 with no dial, no hands, and no crown. The movement itself rotates to tell the time, mounted on a carrousel that makes one full turn per hour, and it was the first wristwatch to put silicon in the escapement. Setting was done by turning the bezel and winding by turning the caseback.
The Freak X arrived in 2019 as a more sporty and affordable model, expanding beyond precious metals. Ulysse Nardin slimmed the movement, brought the case to 43mm, and added a crown for winding and setting. It remains the smallest and thinnest watch in the Freak series.
There is still no dial and no hands. The central bridge carries the movement and functions as the minute hand. A wheel below it indicates the hours. The bridges and indexes are treated with Super-LumiNova.
The case is 43mm titanium with a blue PVD finish, 14mm thick, water resistant to 50 meters, with a sapphire caseback.
Inside is the cal. UN-230, self-winding, 72 hours of reserve, running a flying carrousel that rotates around its own axis. The oscillator is a large-diameter silicium balance wheel at 3Hz, with nickel flyweights and stabilizing micro-blades.
