The Watch: The Planet Ocean has been Omega's serious dive watch since 2005, sitting above the Seamaster 300M in both depth rating and case construction. This reference takes the 39.5mm Planet Ocean and builds the entire case, bezel, and dial out of black zirconium oxide ceramic. Ceramic is roughly half the weight of steel, virtually scratch-proof, and holds its finish indefinitely. The result is a dive watch that looks and feels different from anything in steel.
The ceramic case is finished with diamond tools to create the same polished and brushed surfaces you'd find on a steel Omega, which is technically demanding because ceramic shatters rather than deforms under conventional machining. The dial is the same polished black ceramic, with 18k white gold Arabic numerals, indices, and hands. The white gold against black ceramic gives the dial a depth and contrast that printed or applied steel markers can't match.
Inside is Omega's caliber 8800, a Master Chronometer certified by METAS. That certification goes beyond COSC chronometer testing: the assembled watch (not just the movement) is tested for magnetic resistance to 15,000 gauss, water resistance, power reserve, and accuracy in six positions. Power reserve is 55 hours at 25,200 vph with 35 jewels. The movement features Omega's Si14 silicon hairspring and co-axial escapement.
Water resistant to 600 meters with a helium escape valve at 10 o'clock. The quilted black rubber strap uses a ceramic and titanium deployant clasp with a minderless design that tucks excess strap length underneath rather than using keeper loops.
