This double-signed Vacheron Constantin & Jaeger-LeCoultre 14k white gold, diamond mystery dial watch is an elegant and intriguing piece with history engraved into it.
The Galaxy mystery watch was a unique collaboration featuring both Vacheron Constantin and Jaeger-LeCoultre names on a product. This particular creation was specifically made for the U.S. market, as indicated by the inscription on the inside caseback: "CASED AND TIMED IN U.S.A. BY LECOULTRE." This is further emphasized by the use of 14k white gold for the case, which was commonly preferred in the U.S., unlike the more prevalent 18k gold used in Europe. The mystery dial, a captivating design employed by Jaeger-LeCoultre, and Cartier in their celebrated mystery table clocks, adds to the allure. Numerous variations of the diamond-set "Galaxy" models were produced, but this specific example stands out due to its excellent condition and engraved caseback.
The case shows some light surface scratches, slightly more noticeable on the bezel and center of the caseback. The crown is signed “LeC” and is likely the original crown. The black outer portion and transparent center disc of the dial show light scratches; this is very often seen with this finish due to the delicate nature of the material used. All the diamonds are intact on the dial. The movement is in running condition at this time.
Even more exciting is the engraving on the caseback: “Joe Sugar, from your friends in the industry, 2-25-59.” A short story written in gold.
