The Watch: The first-generation Vacheron Constantin Overseas Chronograph, Ref. 49140, is a study in elegant sport watch design. Produced between 1999 and 2003, this 40mm stainless steel chronograph represents Vacheron's refined response to the growing demand for luxury sports watches at the turn of the millennium. It draws inspiration from the original 222 model of 1977 and was shaped by the minds of Dino Modolo and Vincent Kaufmann, who together developed a modern, integrated aesthetic rooted in Vacheron's classical design heritage.
Despite its integrated bracelet and tool-watch specs, the 49140 wears gracefully on the wrist. At just 12.6mm thick and 45.6mm lug-to-lug (or 51.5mm end-link to end-link), it sits low and comfortably. The white dial version features a silver sunburst finish with faceted Dauphine hands, polished hour markers, and contrasting blackened hands on the subdials for crisp legibility. Each subdial has polished surrounds and circular graining for subtle tonal contrast.
The bracelet on this model is particularly noteworthy: a multi-faceted design with twin polished channels and finely finished internal surfaces, secured with screws rather than pins. The double-deployant clasp includes a ceramic snap system to ensure longevity, as well as a Maltese cross motif locking system. The case and bracelet are mounted with solid screw bars rather than spring bars, underscoring the robust construction throughout.
The movement inside is the Vacheron Caliber 1137, based on the Frederic Piguet 1185, with the addition of a big date module. It is a fully integrated column wheel chronograph with a vertical clutch for smooth starts and stops, a 40-hour power reserve, bidirectional automatic winding, and excellent finishing throughout.
Water resistant to 150 meters and topped with a detailed caseback inspired by the Italian navy training ship Amerigo Vespucci, the 49140 merges technical prowess with real-world versatility. This generation of the Overseas Chronograph stands out for its proportion, detail, and timeless design.
