The Watch: Piaget has spent much of its history pursuing the limits of thinness. The brand introduced the world's thinnest automatic movement (caliber 12P) in 1960 and has held one record or another in the ultra-thin category nearly continuously since. The Altiplano collection, which traces back to a 1957 reference, is where that pursuit gets expressed in the dress watch format. Most variants of the Altiplano sit below 7mm thick, which puts the entire watch in the same physical envelope that most brands reserve for the case alone.
Reference G0A38131 is the Altiplano Date in 18k rose gold. The 40mm case is just 6.36mm thick, achieved by housing the caliber 1205P, an in-house automatic that's only 3mm tall. The movement uses an off-centered 22k rose gold micro-rotor (engraved with the Piaget coat of arms) to achieve the thin profile while still providing automatic winding. 221 components, 27 jewels, 44-hour power reserve at 21,600 vph. Movement finishing includes circular Côtes de Genève, circular-grained mainplate, beveled bridges, sunray-brushed wheels, and blued screws.
The dial is silver and arranged on three levels, with a subtle alternating pattern of single and double hour markers, off-centered small seconds between 4 and 5, and the date at 9 o'clock. The dial doesn't try to make the complications look more important than they are. It just lets them sit cleanly within the layout.
This example shows very light case marks. The original leather strap has been replaced, but the watch retains its original rose gold Piaget buckle.
